Today marks the start of Transgender Awareness Week, running from November 13th through the 19th. This week is a vital opportunity to elevate the voices and visibility of transgender people, reach out and offer support, and educate ourselves and our communities about the issues and discrimination they face.
Immediately following, on November 20th, we will observe Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), and honor transgender people who have lost their lives due to anti-trans violence and discrimination. This day serves as a time to remember those most impacted by systemic oppression, particularly trans women of color, and emphasizes the urgent need for meaningful change.
The importance of community during this time cannot be overstated. Together, we can:
- Educate ourselves and others about transgender stories, experiences, discrimination, and issues.
- Advocate for policies that protect the rights of transgender people of all ages.
- Share stories that highlight the diverse experiences within our community.
- Provide support for mental health, healthcare, and legal resources. Donate to organizations who are directly supporting the trans community.
Let’s stand together, honoring those we’ve lost, supporting our community in any way we can, and continuing to fight for a future where everyone, regardless of gender identity, can live freely and authentically.
